How to rent a car in Canada

Rental car companies (also known as automobile rental and car hire companies) provide a valuable service for people renting cars, whether they are locals looking for a moving van or a leased car, or travelers from out of town. When evaluating car rental in Canada, here are some things to keep in mind.

Car rental features

Generally, rental cars are offered with automatic transmissions. It is rare to find a rental car in Canada with a standard transmission. Many value-added features that were previously unavailable in rental cars now come standard or for a small fee, such as GPS, cruise control, air conditioning, and MP3/CD players.

Are you taking the car out of the province or out of the country?

Car rental companies usually want to know if you are taking the vehicle outside of the province or outside of the country. Sometimes there is an added fee or additional paperwork to be filled out.

To buy insurance or not to buy insurance?

Buying insurance through the car rental company involves an additional daily fee. These extra costs can add up. Some credit cards provide insurance for rental cars, check if yours is one of them and what the deductible is.

Mileage and pre-paying for gas

Depending on the amount of driving you're planning on doing, you might opt for unlimited mileage. On the other hand, if you are only going to be using your rental car for short commutes, you might choose a lower mileage plan. Some car rental companies in Canada will also allow you to pre-pay for gas so that you don't have to fill up the tank before you return the vehicle. The price per litre is generally higher than you'd pay at the gas station, but you might find it worthwhile if you're returning the car in the early morning or late at night when it can be difficult finding an open gas station.
