How to choose a doctor in Canada

Why do you need a medical doctor?

If you don't already have a family doctor, it would be a good idea to find one. At any stage in life, it is important to have a doctor before an emergency arises and to have regular medical consultations. A family physician can perform regular check-ups and physicals, as well as mammograms for women and prostate exams for men.

There are many medical specializations. Depending on your health, age, and desired treatment you may be looking for a pediatrician, an obstetrician-gynecologist (also known as an ob-gyn), an optometrist, a plastic surgeon (sometimes referred to as a cosmetic surgeon), a naturopath, etc. Generally, if a patient is in good health, he is looking for a general practitioner (GP) or family doctor.

Considerations for choosing a doctor

Rapport: we can't overstate the importance that you feel comfortable with your doctor. You should be able to ask the doctor questions and get thoughtful answers. You should not feel rushed or brushed off.

Length of time practising medicine: while a newer doctor may be more up-to-date on recent trends, a doctor who has had a successful practice for many years has gained valuable experience. Depending on the level of care you require, you may opt for a more experienced physician. On the other hand, you probably don't want a doctor who is going to retire shortly unless he or she has someone lined up to take over the practice.

Gender: some patients prefer having a doctor of the same gender. For others, it is less important whether the doctor is male or female.

Coverage: does the doctor have adequate coverage? Who looks after patients when the doctor is unavailable? Does the doctor have an answering service for after-hours emergencies?

Hospital affiliation: if you will require a hospital visit as part of your treatment, there are advantages to dealing with a doctor who is affiliated with a nearby hospital.

Specialization: if you require specific treatment, you likely want a doctor with that area of expertise, for example a pediatrician specializes in children's care while a geriatrician specializes in the care of the elderly. The medical profession is becoming increasingly high-tech with such procedures as micro-surgery, robotic-assisted surgery, and remote surgery. If you are looking for a specialist to perform a specific procedure, you are well-advised to ask about the doctor's experience with these evolving technologies.

Full-family coverage: there are often advantages to having the same doctor treat you, your spouse, and your children.

Your doctor will find it helpful if you can research your family medical history. Genetics play an important role in your overall health. Are your parents alive? If not, how did they pass away? If they are alive, have they had any health issues? How about your grandparents? This is an opportunity to document any medical trends in your family, and to take proactive steps if necessary.
