How to choose a hairdresser in Canada
Hair care and styling has a long history. In addition to cutting hair, barbers used to perform surgery and dentistry. Nowadays, if you visit a hair salon you will find a flurry of activity - trimmers, sinks, shampoo, blowdry, perms, hair dye and colouring, etc. One thing is for certain, it can be tricky finding the right hairdresser.
The first consideration in choosing a hairdresser is whether you are a man or a woman. Many hair stylists will do men's haircuts and women's haircuts. Typically, a barber only cuts men's hair. Generally speaking, a barber does less complicated hairstyles and charges less. If you are a woman with a butch haircut, you may want to visit a barber and save yourself some money.
Before choosing a hairdresser, you might have an idea of the type of hairstyle that you'd like. Examples of hairstyles include pixie cuts, beehive haircut, afro, fringe, bouffant, bun, cornrows, fauxhawk, caesar, braids, mullets, etc.
If you are unable to decide on a hairstyle, another approach is to get suggestions from your hairdresser. A good hairdresser does more than just cut hair, he/she also offers recommendations and suggestions and keeps up on the newest trends and fashions. A good stylist can also ensure that your hairstyle matches your personality and "look." A certain type of haircut may look good on someone in their 20s, less so for someone in their 40s, and vice-versa.
An important factor in choosing a hairdresser is confirming his/her accreditation. Many provinces require that hairdressers, estheticians, and barbers be certified and registered with the appropriate industry association. Another consideration is whether you are looking for a hairdresser specifically or a hair salon with a roster of hairdressers. Some beauty salons allow drop-ins, others operate by appointment only. Check the hours of operation, do they fit your schedule? Enquire about prices, are they within your budget? Do they provide good value for money?
With these tips in hand, we wish you all the best in finding the best hairdresser in Canada to meet your needs.
