How to choose a mechanic in Canada
Many people prefer dealing with a local, independent mechanic, while others feel more comfortable with an auto repair service chain. Your choice will largely depend on the automotive work you want done. For example, many chains have streamlined the process for performing an oil change, cutting costs to the point that independent mechanics can't compete. On the other hand, an independent mechanic might be more eager to earn your repeat business.
Generally, getting your car serviced at the dealership will be your most expensive option, however if you have a new car still under warranty then you may not have a choice. Read the small print in your warranty to confirm. There may also be other reasons to bring your car to a dealership mechanic - in some cases only the auto dealers have access to certain parts or tools.
Regardless of the type of garage, your mechanic should be certified. This is often done through vocational school and/or apprenticeship. Confirm with the garage that its mechanics have the appropriate certifications.
When evaluating an auto mechanic, ask for a written estimate for your automotive repair, broken down by parts and labour. A professional mechanic should not object to this request. Get clarification on whether the parts are factory or after-market. If they are after-market, again, check your warranty. You should not feel pressured into going with any particular mechanic. Remember, you are the customer and the garage should be trying to earn your business.
