How to select a plumber
Referrals and directories are generally a good source for plumbers. Identify some good candidates and ask for a ballpark quote over the telephone - they may or may not be willing to provide this information depending on the complexity of the job. Take note of their tone and attitude over the phone and factor it into your rankings.
Once you have a list of potential plumbers, get a written estimate (including breakdown of parts vs labour) and ask them for the names and contact details of past clients. Ask the referrals about their experience with the plumber. Did the plumber meet the schedule and budget in his quote? Did he clean up after the job was done?
Once work is underway, you can save some money by making sure that the plumber has clear access to the areas where he will be working. Tidy the work area yourself and offer to clean up afterward if necessary. By spending less time on the job, your plumber will be charging you for less of his time.
